The auto industry has a typical pattern each year with video advertising. It invests heavily in the beginning of the year with the Super Bowl, introducing new campaigns that generate tens of millions of views. In 2012, for example, seven out of the top ten campaigns were from the auto industry a few days after the big game. Auto brands launch new campaigns throughout the year, but they have a more difficult time breaking through the noise due to the lack of the consolidated global attention on advertising and heavily focused media spend.

But Honda managed to claim the element of surprise with its "Ferris Bueller"-themed teaser, which collected 4.4 million views last week, more than any other Super Bowl ad, according to Visible Measures.

With over 60 million views, Volkswagen’s The Force is 2011's most viral automotive campaign, and the top viral video campaign overall. The Force leaked a few days before the Super Bowl and generated more than 14 million views before the game even started. From there, the campaign took off and never looked back. With nearly 600 copies and derivatives associated with it, The Force has more than twice the number of views as 2011's runner up and has become one of the most-watched campaigns of all time.

Apple's Introducing iPhone 4S is most viral tech ad of the year. With over 28.7 million views, the campaign trounces its closest competitor, Google's The Web is What You Make Of It, by more than 6 million views. Introducing iPhone 4S marked the launch the much-anticipated iPhone 4S, highlighting product features, including Apple's voice-activated personal assistant, Siri. The campaign has been driven heavily by audiences – we've identified more than 450 copies and derivatives across the web that have generated well over 50% of the views for the entire campaign. The Introducing Siri creative is most-watched for the campaign.
