2011 Super Duty One of Four Fords on This Week's Top 10 Video Ads

Ford's Super Duty truck is the new entry on this week's Top 10 Chart of automotive video ads from around the world. Nothing actually happens in the 44-second ad, but we have a feeling this is the beginning of a bold campaign to pit the truck against rival heavy duty trucks from Chevy and Dodge.

“[Ford] is going to show you step-by-step, part-by-part, from a brand new diesel engine to a whole new transmission, what makes this Super Duty unlike any truck you’ve ever seen,” says Mike Rowe. In its first week on the chart, the ad was seen 9,502 times.

At the top, Volkswagen's clever "The Fun Theory" continues to dominate, but for how long? While the ad was down 33% in its eighth week at the top of the chart, a musical ad from Ford's Fiesta Movement was less than 30,000 views away and closing.

Another long-time video favorite -- Lamborghini's "Are You The One?" about the Reventon -- saw views shoot up 57% thanks to a link from a Korean blog.

If you count Volvo, Ford’s brands comprise 50% of the chart. We're not sure if that's a trend that will hold for the next few weeks, but all you have to do is check here to see what happens.

VW Holds Top Spot as Toyota Drops Back

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Buzz This  Google Buzz | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

The world of online automotive advertising is a wild one indeed, with the ability for a creative, well-placed video ad to go viral - dominating computer screens during lunch breaks the world over. We continue to chart the weekly web video ad traffic, finding that Volkswagen has stayed atop the chart for its fourth week in a row.

After starting out strong on the Motor Trend Top 10 Video Auto Ads chart, Toyota's "For Good Clean Getaways" spot for the subcompact Yaris fell out of the top 3 after posting a 67% drop in page views, its third position taken by the surging "Park Assist" spot for the Volkswagen Passat, which posted a 205% increase. Ford's "Fiesta Movement" ad retained second place. Meanwhile, between the Fiesta's 13% drop and its 7% gain, Volkswagen's "The Fun Theory" widened its already commanding lead at the top.

Toyota wasn't the only automaker whose ad posted a big loss but remained on the chart. Honda's "Everything" spot for the Civic lost 51% of its audience and BMW's "Kinetic Sculpture" lost 23%, the former falling two places to sixth, the latter dropping one to ninth. Kia's resilient "A New Way To Roll" gained one spot despite a 9% drop, finishing fifth, and Lamborghini's "Are You The Chosen One" moved up to seventh while posting a 3% drop.

There were no all-new ads last week, but "Blind Preview" for the Volvo S60 and "Feel The Difference" for the Ford Focus returned, replacing Porsche's "Family Tree" and Citroen's "Creative Technologie," both of which fell off the chart after just one week. The Volvo ad took eighth place, the Ford ad tenth.

Measuring The Top Automotive Ads With Motor Trend

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Buzz This  Google Buzz | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

In the past few months, we've launched online video performance charts for the advertising, film, and webisode industries. Yesterday, we announced the debut of our latest industry chart. Published in conjunction with Motor Trend, the number one automotive authority, our Top 10 Online Auto Ads Chart showcases the Web's top-performing automotive video ads. As with our Ad Age Top 10 Viral Video Ads ChartVariety Top 10 Online Film Trailers Chart, and Mashable Top 10 Webisodes Chart, The Top 10 Online Auto Ads Chart will be ranked on our unique True Reach™ methodology.

We hope that this chart will help to serve as a benchmark for the automotive advertisers and agencies while also providing in-market consumers with a useful, performance-based source of new car information. We here at Visible Measures find this automotive data fascinating in part because online video has become such an integral facet of the car-buying process. Instead of simply reading reviews, automotive literature, and going to the dealers' and manufacturers' sites, consumers are now using online video as a resource for their automotive research and entertainment.

Not surprisingly, automotive advertisers are starting to recognize this shift in consumer behavior. Those who have accounted for these changes in their marketing strategies are already enjoying the benefits of online video, vastly increasing their reach and brand presence online. This chart is the direct result of these automotive advertisers embracing online video. Over time, such rankings will reveal the forward-thinking players of the industry, as well as those who need to put themselves into overdrive to catch up. Fortunately for those who have fallen behind, The Top 10 Online Auto Ads Chart can serve as a virtual road map, featuring the industry's most successful approaches in online video.

Ultimately, the chart is intended to be a resource for watching and researching the top-performing automotive ads, helping the manufacturers and consumers alike as they're looking to find inspiration, scout the competition, and discover their next ride. To get started on this journey, check out the Motor Trend article featuring the Top 10 Auto Ads from last week. You can also find the chart on our Top 10 Auto Ads page.
