Viral video and the end of the world: measuring video interest in the LHC

  
  
  

While turning on CERN’s Large Hadron Collider – a particle collider that was built to recreate conditions 1 trillionth of a second after the Big Bang – was uneventful in cosmic terms, it has caused a rush in viral video. Journalists began revving up for the big event by issuing a deluge of reports on Tuesday, September 9 and again on Wednesday when the collider was turned on, folks were intrigued by the most expensive experiment in history and, not surprisingly, went online to check it out.
