Automotive Advertisers Splurge in Online Video Advertising

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Buzz This  Google Buzz | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

Seven new advertising campaigns have captured spots on Motor Trend's monthly collection of the 10 most popular automotive video ads, including new spots from Volkswagen, Kia, and Lexus. Toyota's Sienna minivan campaign apparently has enough swagger to remain in first place with more than 3.3 million views.

GMC isn't far behind with an ad featuring the new Sierra Heavy Duty in luxurious Denali trim. We're not sure what the ad's contents have to do with trucks or luxury, but it's amusing nonetheless. Humor is a common theme for many of the engaging Top 10 videos you can view below, including Mercedes-Benz's "Sorry." An inattentive E-Class sedan driver has an encounter with Death but the car's technologically advanced safety systems save him from a collision.

Mini's videos challenging Porsche to a race hit ninth place on the chart this month, with 619,515 views. If you've already seen the videos, try watching them again and playing close attention to the writing on the T-shirts of Mini USA's Jim McDowell. Will Mini's campaign stay popular enough to grab a place on the Top 10 chart next month? Find out in next month's installment of the Top 10 most popular automotive video ads right here on Motor Trend.

Toyota Regains Swagger in Online Video With Minivan

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Buzz This  Google Buzz | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

Toyota has regained its swagger with the new Toyota Sienna van, at least when it comes to popular automotive video ads.

The automaker's launch campaign for the redesigned Sienna includes a series of videos called "The Sienna Family," including one humorous music video in which a husband and wife rap about the Toyota. Doesn't sound interesting? Tell that to the people who helped the video accumulate more than five million views this month. That's far more than the second and third place entries on our monthly Top 10 Ads chart, both of which were for the Ford Fiesta.

You may have seen the more popular Fiesta ad, new this month, which compares the subcompact hatchback to a Lamborghini Gallardo. Also new this month is a creative ad for Nissan's European compact SUV, the Qashqai. The crossover dodges paintballs as it nimbly makes its way through town.

No video could make it to the Top 10 chart without being entertaining, so go ahead and view some of the most popular online automotive ads out there by clicking on the thumbnails in the chart below.

Google Cracks Viral Video Code for Chrome While Toyota Swaggers

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Buzz This  Google Buzz | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Two significant new video campaigns battled it out for the top slot on the chart this week: Google's "Chrome Speed Tests" and Toyota's "Swagger Wagon."

Both got some blog coverage last week; Google because its Chrome browser is taking share in the web browser market from Firefox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer; and Toyota because, well, since when do you use YouTube to sell a minivan? Each video gathered a bit more than 1.8 million views last week.

Google not only released "Chrome Speed Test" on the web last week, it also released a great making-of video, also with nearly 500,000 views on YouTube alone. By the way, it took 51 different takes to get the potato fired though the slicer at the moment AllRecipes.com loads onto the screen. Google is no stranger to the chart and has proven itself very adept at creating and distributing videos touting products like Chrome, the Nexus One and new search features such as Googles. Part of that is good creative and part, well, it's nice to own YouTube.

The Toyota video was created by Saatchi & Saatchi and directed by Eastbound and Down producer Jody Hill. Toyota's "Swagger" video is part of the larger "The Sienna Family" campaign, which has been running on TV since February. Toyota's Sienna YouTube page has 10 other videos telling the hilarious backstory of the family, all with more than 100,000 views apiece. And yes, if you'd like the MP3, Toyota will give you that too. The campaign itself is a notable bit of humor amid more serious efforts to rescue Toyota's battered brand.

In all, there were five new campaigns on the chart this week, including work from Google, Toyota, TomTom GPS and Gillette. Returning spots came from Nestle, Evian, Old Spice, Pepsi and Lane Bryant.

But why is it that, if there's a beautiful ad on the chart, it comes out of the U.K.? Retailer John Lewis' video, set to Billy Joel's "She's Always a Woman," was uploaded back in April but was picked up by a few blogs last week, which triggered sharing and a 9th-place chart position.

VW Holds Top Spot as Toyota Drops Back

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Buzz This  Google Buzz | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

The world of online automotive advertising is a wild one indeed, with the ability for a creative, well-placed video ad to go viral - dominating computer screens during lunch breaks the world over. We continue to chart the weekly web video ad traffic, finding that Volkswagen has stayed atop the chart for its fourth week in a row.

After starting out strong on the Motor Trend Top 10 Video Auto Ads chart, Toyota's "For Good Clean Getaways" spot for the subcompact Yaris fell out of the top 3 after posting a 67% drop in page views, its third position taken by the surging "Park Assist" spot for the Volkswagen Passat, which posted a 205% increase. Ford's "Fiesta Movement" ad retained second place. Meanwhile, between the Fiesta's 13% drop and its 7% gain, Volkswagen's "The Fun Theory" widened its already commanding lead at the top.

Toyota wasn't the only automaker whose ad posted a big loss but remained on the chart. Honda's "Everything" spot for the Civic lost 51% of its audience and BMW's "Kinetic Sculpture" lost 23%, the former falling two places to sixth, the latter dropping one to ninth. Kia's resilient "A New Way To Roll" gained one spot despite a 9% drop, finishing fifth, and Lamborghini's "Are You The Chosen One" moved up to seventh while posting a 3% drop.

There were no all-new ads last week, but "Blind Preview" for the Volvo S60 and "Feel The Difference" for the Ford Focus returned, replacing Porsche's "Family Tree" and Citroen's "Creative Technologie," both of which fell off the chart after just one week. The Volvo ad took eighth place, the Ford ad tenth.
