The Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith and produced by his father Will Smith, hits theaters this weekend on a high in online video with over 9.3 million views this week. Set in China, Dre Parker (Smith) must learn to defend himself from the schoolyard bullies, who, amazingly, are all black belts. Yet, Jackie Chan, the new Mr. Miagi, trains young Parker through seemingly monotonous motions like put the jacket on and take the jacket off... yup, the days of wax on and wax off are long gone. The film grew by 150%, up from an impressive 3.6 million views last week. A promotional music video featuring Smith and teen sensation Justin Bieber seems to have helped drive significant interest in the film in online video.
Also hitting theaters this weekend is The A-Team. Adapted from the popular television series, the film grew a healthy 30% to garner over 760,000 views and take seventh place, up from eighth last week.
New This Week
Get Him To The Greek surged after its release last weekend to reach 700,000 views and seventh place, making its first appearance on the chart. Inception, five weeks from release and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, lands at tenth place for its chart debut.
Top Heavy
In all, the top three films this week account for over 80% of the chart's total views. In addition to The Karate Kid's impressive growth spike, Toy Story 3 and Twilight Saga: Eclipse both shot up 50%. Together, the three films amassed 23.6 million views this week.
