Toy Story 3 Follows Box Office Boom with Online Video Surge
Toy Story 3 barreled into theaters last weekend taking an impressive box office bounty of more than $110 million. But the good news for the film doesn't stop there. In online video, where we can gauge general interest in a film, the 3D animated pic from Pixar continues to surge, jumping 80% to reach 10.8 million views. This hefty view count was enough to dethrone perpetual online video juggernaut Eclipse, which opens Wednesday, by 400,000 views. Toy Story 3 is the only non-Twilight film to break the 10 million view ceiling in a week.
Starring a large swath of the SNL contingent from the 1990s, Sony's comedy Grown Ups hits its second highest weekly view count yet as it prepares to release this weekend. The film spiked nearly a month ago and then fell silent in the subsequent weeks. It bounced back this week, growing nearly 50% to reach 450,000 views and take 10th place.
Biggest Bump
Another 3D animated film, Despicable Me, skyrocketed this week to grow over 220%. Still two weeks from release, the massive bump helped the film reach nearly 2 million views and put it into third place. The increase in views comes from a new trailer released by Universal late last week.
