Social Video Success Stories: Kids Doing Cute Things

The latest family-oriented viral has taken the Web by storm, complete with cute kids, sing-alongs, head banging, and air drum solos. Bohemian Rhapsody On The Way To School features Dad driving his three kids to school whilst the entire car rocks out to the classic Queen song, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Since its YouTube release on April 11, Bohemian Rhapsody On The Way To School’s popularity has surged, generating more than 2.8 million views to date. The original clip has inspired nearly 4,000 comments across more than ten copies and derivatives. It’s also been written about on CBS and MSNBC, and BuzzFeed -- an impressive feat for the young Atlanta-based family.

Bohemian Rhapsody On The Way To School reminded us of another viral blockbuster featuring a cute kid, David After Dentist. The video documents a groggy seven year-old struggling to comprehend the effects of surgical anesthetic. David After Dentist has garnered 158.6 million views to date. It also has more than 250 placements associated with it, which include copies, spoofs, and any derivative content.

So how do the two compare? We dug into the data, and looked at the performance 21 days after the both clips were uploaded. But even when we normalize the data, it isn't exactly a fair fight. As we mentioned earlier, Bohemian Rhapsody On The Way To School currently has over 2.8 million views. At the same time after release, David After Dentist had already generated a whopping 21.2 million views.

In this kids-doing-cute-things battle in social video, David After Dentist wins, but don’t discount Bohemian Rhapsody On The Way To School—2.8 million is no small number, and it still has the potential to collect more views.
