Dark Shadows Creeps The Online Film Chart
Dark Shadows releases nationwide this weekend, creeping up the chart to fifth place. The latest Tim Burton creation stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, a vampire charged with protecting his long-lost, dysfunctional family. Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jonny Lee Miller co-star. During its first week of release, the comedy gathered 2.6 million views for its week of release, a growth of over 100% over last week. The film has more than 400 assets, the majority of them copies and derivatives of the first trailer.
Compared to Burton’s last film, Alice In Wonderland, Dark Shadows is trailing behind in views. When Alice In Wonderland launched, it had generated a total of 8.3 million views online and went on to rake in $116 million at the box office.
Last weekend, The Avengers broke box office records with its release, grossing $207.4 million, besting the previous opening weekend record set by Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million). The Avengers continues to build momentum this week with 20.1 million views, a growth of 68%. Promotion for the blockbuster has been widespread, from TV spots, trailers, to co-branded TV ads like those with Target and Acura.
