After years of anticipation for the Batman faithful, The Dark Knight Rises finally hits theaters this week. The conclusion of Christopher Nolan's Batman triology stars Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Gary Oldman and is set eight years after the conclusion of The Dark Knight. It is peacetime in Gotham, despite Batman going into hiding, but a new menace threatens the city that compells Bruce Wayne to don his batsuit for one last time.
In online video, The Dark Knight Rises is a monster. It's generated well over 220 million views to date from over 6,000 video clips. What's incredible about this number is that the studio for the film, Warner Bros., is responsible for *only* 38.3 million views, which means that audiences have driven over 180 million views for the film.
Perhaps even more interesting is how it compares to The Dark Knight when it released back on July 14, 2008. As of its release date, The Dark Knight had scored 48+ million views, with no views coming from the movie studio.
Of course 2008 was a different time for online video – there was less content and less people watched less frequently – but a discrepancy of over 150 million views between the two films is titanic.
In anticipation of the release of The Dark Knight Rises, we took a look at the Top 10 official trailers around the world. Warner Bros. has YouTube channels for specific markets and has launched Dark Knight Rises trailers for each of them. Some of them simply have subtitles, like the trailers for Argentina, Mexico, and Poland, but others, like Germany, France, and Italy have been dubbed. It's a fascinating look at how the world sees and hears the Caped Crusader.
