Gangnam Style Tops 1 Billion Views, Beats Call Me Maybe

Big news in the online video world: PSY's Gangnam Style has topped 1 billion views. The dance moves, the humor, and beats have inspired a global meme, crossing national boundaries, ages, and genres of music. The original video has been watched more than 438 million times since PSY first uploaded it in July.

Which means that hundreds of millions of views are coming from audience-driven clips. Using our True Reach methodology, we've identified more than 600 related videos* to the original music video -- which, by the way, is more than double the number we found less than a month ago. These related videos include spoofs, mashups, video responses, video reactions, live performances, dance routines, and more.

In all, the True Reach of Gangnam Style has topped 1.2 billion views. And it's STILL climbing, averaging 36 million views daily in the past week. That means that over 800 million views are coming from audience-driven clips, nearly double what the original music video has produced – making Gangnam Style a true viral phenomenon.

Gangnam Style Call Me Maybe Visible Measures

Gangnam Style Beats Call Me Maybe

Gangnam Style's surge has been so big and so fast that it's surpassed Call Me Maybe in total views to date. Call Me Maybe caught fire after being uploaded in March, inspiring more than 250* spoofs, parodies and mashups. Today, Call Me Maybe's True Reach view count is just under 1 billion views – 998 million – nearly 300 million less than Gangnam Style.

What do you think of the results? Are you shocked at how massive these music videos have become online? Let us know in the comments section below!

Ah, I was waiting for your update on this story when you first posted 4 weeks ago when it was at 145M views (300M by your true reach measure).

I emailed you asking how it would do at that current pace, but I'm astounded that it managed to basically double its pace.

Just incredible how big this video has become over the past month. Great work as well.

Now, do you think the original clip can surpass Baby and become the biggest Youtube video of all time? It's some 330M away right now.

Is that possibly too by your True Reach measure?
